brock university update

for complex news, i'm pierce simpson // thecontroversial ruling involving convicted rapist brock turner, has sparked outrage around theworld. the 20-year old former standford swim teammember received a six-month sentence for the sexual assault of an unconscious woman behinda dumpster, near the stanford university campus. people are outraged at the criminal slap onthe wrist and want answers as to why the upper-class, white male is receiving what seems to be preferentialfrom the justice system. a letter by brock turner's father surfaced over the weekenddetailing his feelings that his son should not and i quote: "pay a steep price for 20 minutes of actionout of his 20 years of life"

the letter added fuel to the fire and thepublic wants to know why the media continues to show turner's joyful swim photo as opposedto his mugshot that was finally released today. new york mag's, the cut, provided some insightas to why there was a delay in the release of the mugshot. "james jensen, a public information officerfor the santa clara sheriff's department, told the cut that though the image is accessiblewithin the county's network of police departments, it's the arresting agency's responsibilityto decide whether or not to release the photo — in this case, that's the stanford departmentof public safety. the two departments seemed to be volleyingthe responsibility for releasing the mug shot

back and forth. around 4:30 p.m. today jamesjensen of the santa clara sheriff's department finally emailed a mug shot to us — not theone from the day of turner's arrest, but from the day of his sentencing. presumably thearrest mug shot taken at stanford is still being kept private." the judge who handled the brock turner case, aaron persky, is facing backlash and a petition has started in california to remove him fromthe judicial bench. mind you, persky is a stanford alum. the original buzzfeed article written by thevictim has been viewed over 6 million times. brock turner's victim continues to remainanonymous, but her bravery and strength has

helped uncover serious flaws in the justicesystem: "on that morning, all that i was told wasthat i had been found behind a dumpster, potentially penetrated by a stranger, and that i shouldget retested for hiv because results don’t always show up immediately. but for now, ishould go home and get back to my normal life. imagine stepping back into the world withonly that information. they gave me huge hugs and i walked out of the hospital into theparking lot wearing the new sweatshirt and sweatpants they provided me, as they had onlyallowed me to keep my necklace and shoes." allen's legal team plans to appeal his currentsentence. continue to stay locked to complex for thelatest in this ongoing story. for complex
